A Rug Is Not Just Carpet You Can Move
Area rugs collect more soil per square foot than wall-to-wall carpet, because they sit in the places people actually walk and sit. But they cannot be treated the same way. Many are wool, some are silk-blend, and plenty are dyed with colors that will run the moment the wrong chemistry hits them.
A rug also has no padding underneath to absorb moisture. Water goes straight through to the floor below, which is how people end up with a clean rug and a damaged hardwood. Fiber identification and moisture control are the whole job.

Pile set in one direction, fringe handled separately, and airflow placed to dry it evenly.
Can You Steam Clean a Wool Rug?
Yes, but not the way you would steam clean a nylon carpet. Wool needs cooler water and neutral pH. Hot water and alkaline detergent are what cause wool to shrink, felt and lose texture — and none of that is reversible.
The other risk is dye. Older wool and hand-knotted rugs were often dyed with colours that were never fully colourfast, so we test in a concealed corner before any solution touches the visible pile. If a rug fails that test, we tell you before we start instead of apologising afterward.
There is also the floor. A rug has no padding underneath to hold moisture, so water goes straight through to whatever is below it. On hardwood that matters, and in a condo it is somebody else’s ceiling. Moisture control is most of the job.
Oriental and Hand-Knotted Rug Cleaning
Oriental, Persian and other hand-knotted rugs are cleaned fibre-first: we identify the construction, test the dye, remove the dry soil, then clean at the temperature and pH the fibre can actually take.
Dry soil removal is the stage people skip and it is the most important one on a rug. Rugs hold an enormous amount of fine grit at the base of the pile, and introducing water to grit turns it into mud inside the weave. It comes out dry first, every time.
Fringe is handled separately from the field, because it is cotton where the rug is wool and it behaves completely differently.
